Unsolved problems in Astrophysics and Cosmology

July 6-10 2026

The 8th edition of the workshop “Unsolved Problems in Astrophysics and Cosmology” will take place between 6-10 July, 2026 in Klosterneuburg, Austria, on the campus of The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) on the outskirts of Vienna. We wish to promote strong interdisciplinary interactions in this stimulating setting.

The rationale of the workshop is to bring together the most active scientists in those fields of Astrophysics and Cosmology that hold the promise of answering the most fundamental questions about the Universe. We will cover broad areas from (exo)planets to the first galaxies and black holes and cosmology, as well as gravitational waves. The workshop will kept small (approximately 60 attendees) and interactive, and will center around discussions as much as possible. ‘Unsolved Problems’ has been organized regularly, roughly every four years since 2002, to provide a forum to chart the path to progress. The inaugural edition took place in 2002 in Daejeon, South Korea, followed by meetings in Benasque (Spain), Budapest (Hungary) and Jerusalem (Israel). Past meetings have resulted in new collaborations, ideas and papers that originated during those sessions, and we aim to accomplish the same in 2026.

The workshop will also coincide with the round-of-16 and quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA world cup, and will provide facilities and schedule the talks to allow viewing the corresponding matches. The meeting will follow the informal and highly interactive and successful workshops we have held during the last six world cups.
